Transitioning from Objects to Services - a Report from the Trenches

This case study describes a travel industry service provider that had a portfolio of hard-to-maintain, hard-to-change legacy applications, augmented with packaged applications, which inhibited the growth of the company through targeted acquisitions and developing new distribution channels (i.e. B2B channels). The portfolio of object based legacy applications was migrated to a pure SOA, paving the way to a highly responsive IT that is well aligned with the business.
The presentation will first outline the shortcomings of the legacy applications, followed by a discussion of the key objectives of the SOA. It will then detail the breakdown of the SOA into well-defined application services, infrastructure services, and integration services, following a separation of concerns as a key architectural principle. Finally, the presentation shows how these services were successfully re-used for the implementation of a new B2B gateway, which significantly shortened the time-to-market for the support of new trading partners that have diverse integration requirements.
